Parc et jardin du château de Bussy-Rabutin

The castle's garden is the legacy of several centuries of creation. As early as 1604, the archives mention the existence of an orchard, a vegetable garden and a park. From 1666 onwards, its most famous owner, Roger de Rabutin, embellished the interior and exterior of his residence: he laid out the trident-shaped paths and the gardens, which he described as "boxwood squares in compartments, with two rectangular exedras on either side, enclosed by walls and bordered by a raised terraced walkway".
From 1735 to 1758, the new countess of Bussy, Geneviève Alexis de Salins, created a new vegetable garden and a new orchard, designed the paths of the park and planted the lime trees, laid out the bower grove in a star shape, enlarged the terrace of the regular gardens with flower beds and installed a circular pool with a water jet in the centre.
Badly damaged during the French Revolution, the estate was restored from 1835 by the Counts of Sarcus. They rethought the park with a freer treatment of the vegetation and arranged statuary groups.
State property since 1929, the ensemble was restored between 1991 and 1993: based on the 17th century plan, it nevertheless retains certain 19th century features, thus highlighting the contrast between regular gardens on the terrace and irregular gardens on the park side. The landscape architect has finally added a little folly that delights young and old, a labyrinth of greenery.
Both a historical and a pleasure garden, it offers a bucolic conclusion to your visit. It can also be dissociated from the visit to the castle, and offers a beautiful stroll through three centuries of garden design history.
