In the commune of Vic-sous-Thil in the Côte d'Or, the 480-metre-high Butte de Thil offers one of the most beautiful views of the Auxois region.
At its summit, the watchtower of the ancient medieval fortress (9th-14th centuries), 25 metres high and five storeys high, dominates the valleys of the Armançon to the east and the Serein to the west.
The castle's keep can be seen from 30 km around and from the A6 motorway.
Like a sentinel, it is no coincidence that traditionally it is called "The Spy of the Auxois".
An exceptional panorama is offered to you where the peaceful landscapes of a nature shaped by the hand of the man during centuries, between the hills of Auxois and the first buttresses of Morvan.
At the top of the hill, two listed monuments stand: the medieval fortress, which André Malraux said was the oldest fortified castle in France", and nearby, the very beautiful Gothic collegiate church built in the 14th century, whose walls are fitted with archways.
The two buildings are linked by an avenue of five hundred year old lime trees.
Finally, there are more than 50 kilometres of signposted and well-maintained footpaths all around to discover the charming village of Vic-sous-Thil and its surroundings.
